    Give and Take..
Cool part, skiing on the first double black diamond (experts only) in your life, and not only doing it well, but doing it multiple times.

Bad part, as you're working your way down the mountain later to go home, you slip on a pretty flat part of a blue and slightly tweak you're knee so now its fairly sore and you walk with a limp.

    Figures :)

    Updated...
I'm pretty lazy about updating these days, but then again, I'm pretty busy with research/classes/teaching. I've dropped down to working only 6 days a week (or rather, being in the lab 6 days a week, on the 7th I typically grade at home). As a result, there isn't much I can talk about. Thanksgiving was nice as I went over to Jason/Myriah's place and hung out with them and Fin. In about the past month, I've had 3 people from high school visit (Michelle, Anj and Aaron, and Cynthia) which is always a blast. Aside from that, I'm mostly buried at work.

In regards to that, I've tried to find a decent public presentation that describes my experiment (T2K), but they are hard to find (suprisingly!). The best I have found so far is this:

    http://www.nd280.org/presentations/kudenko.pdf

Its still a bit techincal, but so far its the best I could find (there looks to be a nice public webpage, but its in Japanese, so that won't help that much.) Oh well, back to research now. I will be back in Chicago for the last 2 weeks in Dec as well for those who are curious.

    Where were you...
I had just reached 4 miles while running at the gym when CNN announced that it was a few seconds before polls closed on the west coast. After that, they just cut to a picture of their display with just the words "Barack Obama is projected to be the president-elect." There was no talking, just several seconds of that shot, then they spent the next 5 or so minutes taking video from the various gatherings and showing crowd reactions.

Honestly, as a country, its a very impressive moment. You see, an American is really someone who follows a certain set of beliefs, not really an ethnicity. Someone who just came over from another country and is now a citizen is just as Amercian as someone whose family has been here for generations. Its really nice to see the country find someone they though was most qualified and really didn't care that much about ethnicity. Granted, pretty much all people are currently talking about is his race, but we didn't elect him for that, we elected him because we believe in him.

Of course, if he doesn't live up to it, we'll pretty much berate him like every other politician.

All of that's is very American, I think.

    Stupid degenerate eigenvalues..
I'm trying to prove that the energy is degenerate if [A,H]=0, [B,H]=0, but [A,B] != 0 (so the eigenstates of A and B are eigenstates of H with energy eigenvalues). It doesn't seem too hard, yet I keep running into a wall. Maybe this is a sign that I need to stop studying for a bit :P

    Stupid brain.

    Qual amusement
so I'm studying for the quals by doing some old exams. I'm working on a basic '02 exam, and the problem is a cat and a "Chicago rat" pulling on a rope. What makes the problem amusing is that the 2nd part talks about how a "regular rat" can only apply 1/10th the amount of force that a Chicago rat can.

    Makes me proud.

    Its official...
I am now truly working on T2K. Today, I hurt myself doing work on/for the experiment on 3 separate occasions (nothing major, some minor burns/cuts). I always say you're not an experimentalist until you bleed on an experiment.

    Even more pics are up
Pics from my day trip to the San Juan islands (Orca island specifically) are up. Normal place. The highlight was hiking up 2500 feet to the summit of the highest mountain on the islands. Not too shabby.

Its been a long time since I've been able to sit on my porch, smoke a cigar, and just enjoy a nice evening. Granted, I have 2 exams and a paper due next week, but for right now, all is right with the world.

    Gaming..
For the first time in months/almost a year, I got a new game.

I grabbed a copy of "On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One". Its basically the game that the guys over at Penny Arcade have been working on. I saw it on Jason's x-box over the weekend, and it seemed alot of fun, so I grabed it online for $20. And I just wasted the past few hours playing, and I want to keep playing.

Overall, its a pretty solid game with some good humor and decent graphics. The gameplay takes some getting used to at first (esp blocking) but it quickly becomes 2nd nature and all is good. I played both the PC and 360 version and they're pretty much the same cept the PC version is at a higher res so its easier to see things.

Overall, good times, and its pretty short which means I can fit it into my schedule (aka maybe an hour every few days if I'm lucky).

    For you chicago folk..
I saw an "Empire Carpet" commercial on TV while running at the gym today. It actually brought a smile to my face to know that the phone # I will never forget is making its way here.

    And yet more office Quotes
    *on a quantum assignment*
Question: "Can you think of a use for this system"
    Eric: "No."

Scott: I can use that (formula), but I can't reproduce it (from the book).
    Tomas: Reproduce with that.
Eric: That's alot of paper cuts.

    Eric: "Level of understanding: 0
Throwing stuff down on paper that mathematically arrives at the right
    answer:"
    Tomas: "Priceless"

While toasting another day at Schultzy's:
    Scott: "Gentlemen, and Tomas."

    ugh, long day
Nothing like a 12 hour day in the office, with 6 of 'em being labs. Oh well. And, of course, my phone died as well and I ended up missing a ton of calls as well. When it rains, it pours :)

    More office quotes.
Tomas: All I learned in Stat Mech, is if N is big, I can do whatever I want.
Eric: I have confidence you will make a good banana.
Anders: We would love to be chased by a man in a banana suit with a baseball bat.
